Xiaomi has taken a lot of efforts to explore technologies that until recently were the stuff of science fiction. Their new array of products showcases high-tech capabilities combined with a revolutionary design. Xiaomi Mi VR Glasses became not just a slightly better “dressed” older version, Mi VR Headset. Xiaomi Released a Smartphone with Flexible 5.7″ OLED-Display — Mi Note 2

 

“So far this is one of the best products we have made”, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun referred to its latest flagship model Xiaomi Mi Note 2. The first smartphone of the company to bear a flexible AMOLED-display, however, stays as traditional as possible: high-end camera, fingertip reader, slim body... Tech enthusiasts around the world have a lot to be excited about.
Xiaomi Mi Note 2 features a 5.7-inch display with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. It covers 77.2 % of the front side and gives iPhone 7 Plus a pause with its 67.7 %. OLED-displays are very demanding in manufacturing. At the same time, they are brighter, reflect less light and consume not so much power.

 

Under the hood, there is an overwhelming Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with maximum tactical frequency 2.35 GHz. This is the most powerful chipset Qualcomm has developed. Apart from smartphones, it has been used in unmanned aerial vehicles! Mi Note 2 will be available in several modifications: 4GB RAM + 64 GB and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB.

 

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 sports 2 cameras: the main camera uses 22.5 MP Sony IMX31 sensor, records video in 4K format and has a 3-axis digital image stabilization. The front selfie camera has an 8 MP IMX268 sensor and delivers good color accuracy.

 

High-power battery (4070 mAh) with a Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 technology is a perfect match for an active mobile user. USB Type-C port is used for charging and synchronization. Mi Note 2 supports 37 frequencies in LTE-standard which enables to travel with it around the world. AQSTIC HD Audio chip provides a studio sound.

 

3D glass covers front and back of the phone and the sides are framed with aluminum, which is also used in aerospace industry. The design is attractive and a softly rounded form allows the phone to sit comfortably in the hand. Xiaomi Mi Note 2 has two color variations: blue-gray and black which gives a solid and sophisticated look.

 

The front panel contains the screen, front camera, and fingerprint sensor. Back side is taken only by 22.5 MP camera and dual LED-flash. The left side of the phone has a slot for Nano-SIM, and the right side has lock button and volume regulator. Xiaomi Mi Note 2 weighs 166 gram and its dimensions are 156.2×77.3×7.6 mm.

 

Analysts predict strong sales for Xiaomi Mi Note 2. And the misfortunes of its South Korean rival probably deserve a bit of the credit. A new smartphone will not disappoint those who will hop on the Xiaomi train.

 

Pushing Boundaries: Xiaomi Introduced Frameless Smartphone Mi MIX

 

Latest Xiaomi’s official presentation was rich with novelties and surprises. After a rapturous standing ovation, Mi Note 2 received, Chinese giant has rolled another ace out of its sleeve — a frameless smartphone Mi MIX. “Future has already come” served as an unofficial slogan. It was designed by a French arts man Philippe Starck. A large display, that conquered 91.3 % of the front surface, holds the record among all the smartphones.

 

Mi MIX features a sleek ceramic body. It comes as 6.4″ inches with resolution 2040×1080 pixels. We must not fail, however, to point out, that having similar dimensions, its rivals wears only 5.5 ″ display. Trying to make screen field as wide as possible Xiaomi had to practice a few tricks, e. g. the earpiece was replaced with a piezoelectric speaker that uses the phone body to generate sound. 5 MP front-facing camera was relocated under the display. At its rear Mi MIX is equipped with a fingertip sensor and 16 MP camera with dual LED-lights, f / 2.0 aperture and ability to record video in 4K.

 

Xiaomi has a potential to develop its own processors. For now, it seems reluctant to refuse some outside help, especially when it is competent. Mi MIX has a powerful chipset from Qualcomm — Snapdragon 821 with frequency 2.35 GHz. Two memory packs will be available: 4 GB RAM and 128 GB of storage and 6 GB RAM / 128 GB. The latter will have 18-carat gold accents surrounding camera and fingertip reader.

 

Mi MIX bears traditional features for a Xiaomi smartphone, mostly upgraded. It is powered by a 4400 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. Connectivity options include GPS, NFC, WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth. It will have two SIMs, a popular feature in China, and will be able to work in LTE-networks. It measures 158.8×81.9×7.9 mm and weighs 209 grams.

Canadian grandmother accused of pirating zombie game

Canadian grandmother Christine McMillan does not include killing zombies among her hobbies, neither does she play the games that would allow her to do so.

So when she received a letter accusing her of illegally downloading first-person shooter Metro 2033, she was surprised.

She had never heard of the game and did not understand why she faced a fine of thousands of dollars.

The firm that sent the letter said the incident was "an unfortunate anomaly".

It is now mandatory for Canadian ISPs to forward the physical addresses of people whose IP address has been identified by content owners as being the source of illegal downloads.

It is part of the Canadian government's Notice and Notice regulations, introduced under last year's Copyright Modernisation Act.

The regulation requires that infringement notices issued by content owners are forwarded to users.

"I found it quite shocking. I'm 86, no-one has access to my computer but me, why would I download a war game?" Mrs McMillan told Go Public - an investigative news team from Canada's CBC TV network.

Metro 2033 was released in 2010 and is based in the ruins of Moscow, following a nuclear war. Players must defeat an evil mutant race.

At first, she thought it was a scam but after calling her internet service provider Cogeco, she realised that the notices are perfectly legal.

Mrs McMillan told Go Public: "It seems to be a very foolish piece of legislation."

Thousands of Canadians are likely to have received similar notices, which warn them that they have been identified as having downloaded content without paying for it and offer a one-off payment to avoid the case going to court.

Copyright holders such as game developers and film studios are typically hiring third-party firms to collect money from the alleged pirates.

In this case, the private firm Canadian Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement (CANIPRE) sent the letter.

It read: "In the event that this matter remains unresolved and/or you continue to engage in the unauthorised copying and distribution of copyrighted works, you could be in violation of the Acceptable Use policy you may be party to with your ISP."

In response to a BBC enquiry, the firm said that what it described as the "McMillan notice" was "simply one of multiple of thousands of notices that we handle monthly".

It accused ISP Cogeco of being "unreliable" in the way it "reconciles the IP... to the appropriate subscriber".

It went on to offer a one-off payment of 5,000 Canadian dollars ($3,700, £3,000) to settle the case. Mrs McMillan said she has no intention of paying.
'Relying on fear'

There is no legal obligation to pay the fines, according to experts, who point out that an IP address is not proof of guilt because the connection could have been used by someone other than the bill payer.

Allowing others to use your internet connection does not make you responsible for copyright infringement, according to the UK's Citizens Advice.

Similar cases have arisen in the UK in recent years.

Last year, thousands of customers of O2 and Sky received letters demanding cash for illegally downloading pornographic films. While Sky stopped short of telling users not to pay, it advised them to "carefully read the letter".

According to copyright news website TorrentFreak, such schemes rely on fear.

"The power of the settlement scheme lies in the uncertainty people face. Most recipients are unaware of the notice-and-notice system and fear that a lawsuit is looming. However, thus far not a single lawsuit has followed in these cases," it said.

CANIPRE told the BBC that it would take a case to court in Canada soon.

"We will establish a precedent case here in Canada concerning copyright infringement. We have many substantive case files to choose from and will establish a legal precedent here in due course."

Can machines keep us safe from cyber-attack?

After robot cars and robot rescue workers, US research agency Darpa is turning its attention to robot hackers.

Best known for its part in bringing the internet into being, the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency has more recently brought engineers together to tackle what it considers to be "grand challenges".

These competitions try to accelerate research into issues it believes deserve greater attention - they gave rise to serious work on autonomous vehicles and saw the first stumbling steps towards robots that could help in disaster zones.

Next is a Cyber Grand Challenge that aims to develop software smart enough to spot and seal vulnerabilities in other programs before malicious hackers even know they exist.

"Currently, the process of creating a fix for a vulnerability is all people, and it's a process that's reactive and slow," said Mike Walker, head of the Cyber Grand Challenge at Darpa.

This counted as a grand challenge, he said, because of the sheer complexity of modern software and the fundamental difficulty one computer had in understanding what another was doing - a problem first explored by computer pioneer Alan Turing.

He said the need for quick fixes would become more pressing as the world became populated by billions of small, smart net-connected devices - the so-called internet of things.

"The idea is that these devices will be used in such quantities that without automation we just will not be able to field any effective network defence," he said.

The cyber challenge climaxes this week at the Def Con hacker convention, where seven teams will compete to see whose software is the best hacker.
Blowing up

But automated, smart digital defences are not limited to Darpa's cyber arena.

Software clever enough to spot a virus without human aid is already being widely used.

A lot of what anti-virus software did had to be automatic, said Darren Thomson, chief technology officer at Symantec, because of the sheer number of malicious programs the bad guys had created.

There are now thought to be more than 500 million worms, Trojans and other viruses in circulation. Millions more appear every day.

That automation helped, said Mr Thomson, because traditional anti-virus software was really bad at handling any malware it had not seen before.

"Only about 30-40% of all the things we protect people against are caught by these programs," he said.

For the rest, said Mr Thomson, security companies relied on increasingly sophisticated software that could generalise from the malware it did know to spot the malicious code it did not.

Added to this are behavioural systems that keep an eye on programs as they execute and sound the alarm if they do something unexpected.

Some defence systems put programs they are suspicious about in a virtual container and then use different techniques to try to make the code "detonate" and reveal its malicious intent.

"We simulate keystrokes and make it look like it is interacting with users to make the malware believe it's really being used," Mr Thomson said.
Clever code

The rise of big data has also helped spur a step towards security software that can help improve the chances of catching the 60-70% of malicious threats that traditional anti-virus can miss.

"Machine learning helps you look at the core DNA of the malware families rather than the individual cases," said Tomer Weingarten, founder and chief executive of security company SentinelOne.

The approach had emerged from the data science world, said Mr Weingarten, and was proving useful because of the massive amount of data companies quickly gathered when they started to monitor PCs for malicious behaviour.

"There is a lot of data, and a lot of it is repetitive," he said.

"Those are the two things you need to build a very robust learning algorithm that you can teach what's bad and what's good.

"If you want to do something malicious, you have to act, and that is something that will be forever anomalous to the normal patterns."

Automating this anomaly detection is essential because it would be impossible for a human, or even a lot of humans, to do the same in a reasonable amount of time.

And it is not just PCs that are better protected thanks to machine learning.

When it comes to large companies and governments, cyber-thieves are keen to lurk on their internal networks while seeking out the really juicy stuff such as customer databases, designs for new products or details of contract negotiations and bids.

It was another situation in which the machines outstripped their human masters, said Justin Fier, director of cyber-intelligence at security company Dark Trace.

"You can take a large dataset and have the machine learn and then use advanced mathematics to pull out the needle in the haystack that does not belong," he said.

"Sometimes, it will get the subtle anomaly that you might not catch with the human eye."

However, said Mr Fier, it would be wrong to think of machine learning as true AI.

It was a step towards that kind of approach, he said, but regularly needed human intelligence to make the final decision about some of the events the smart software picked out.

And, he said, the usefulness of machine learning might not lie entirely with those who used it for defence.

"We had one incident in which we caught malware that was just watching users and logging their habits," he said.

"We have to assume that it was trying to determine the most suitable way to exfiltrate data without triggering alarms.

"Where the malware starts to use machine learning is when it's going to get really interesting."

Review: Lenovo Yoga lookalike on a budget

A couple of months ago, Asian tech sites started talking about a new trend among Chinese tablet manufacturers. Since the tablet market was overheating, manufacturers were looking beyond tablets to ensure growth. Intel’s new 14nm processors were just what they were looking for, as they enabled them to start building inexpensive ultraportable notebooks. Many of them are marketed as “ultrabooks” but unlike proper Ultrabooks, they’re not based on “big core” processors.

At first glance, we thought the Voyo A1 Plus was just another convertible tablet, or 2-in-1. However, on closer inspection it became obvious that the Voyo A1 Plus is a Lenovo Yoga clone, which is why we started referring to it as the “Voyoga”.

The design is nearly identical; from the choice of colours to the 360 degree lid hinges. While this is an unoriginal design to say the least, it worth pointing out that Voyo found a good product to clone. As a result, ergonomics are not a problem, and the device is thin and sleek.

It may look like a Yoga, but the differences under the bonnet are huge. The Voyo is based on Intel’s new Cherry Trail Atom x5-Z8300, and this particular SKU ships with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. This means it’s quite a bit slower than a proper Yoga, but it’s also quite cheap, with prices starting at about $250

Micro Bit computer becomes a commercial product

The BBC Micro Bit, the tiny computing device designed to get children coding, is going on sale to the general public.

The device is already being delivered, free, to one million Year 7 children in schools across the UK.

Now it will also be available to buy from the various partners in the project for £12.99.

Commercial availability of the Micro Bit follows the signing of a licensing deal with the device's manufacturer, the Leeds-based company, element 14.

The firm says it will only sell them in batches of 90.

But retailers including Microsoft, the Technology Will Save Us organisation and Sciencescope will offer individual devices.
